  MENOPAUSE
Regardless of what you’ve heard, there is nothing to sing about in menopause. Sure, you can’t get pregnant and can throw away the monthly paraphernalia, but look what you get in return: a dry vagina, pruny skin, sleepless nights, fragile bones, hot flashes, cold sweats, splitting headaches and more. After a lifetime of cramps and delivering babies, what have you done to deserve this? Yes, menopause is a natural part of the aging process. Women do indeed cease to produce enough estrogen to keep them at their youthful best. But do you have to just live with it as so many doctors suggest?
Before we answer that, let’s take a look at a woman’s path to menopause for just a moment.

A WOMAN’S REPRODUCTIVE LIFE

The natural stages in a woman’s reproductive life include puberty, pre-menopause, perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause.

At puberty, a girl begins her menstrual periods. This launches her into her reproductive years. During this time, her ovaries produce the two hormones—estrogen and progesterone—that give her the possibility of becoming pregnant. Testosterone also is produced to improve brain and muscular skeletal functions. This reproductive phase continues from early adolescence into a woman’s mid-to-late 40s.

After this stage, perimenopause arrives, which is a transitional period that begins 2-8 years before menopause and continues through the first 12 months after a woman’s last menstrual period. During perimenopause, the ovaries gradually produce less and less estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone making these hormone levels begin to fluctuate up and down. As a result, a woman's periods often become irregular and she may start to develop symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and headaches. It is interesting to note that what women refer to as "going through menopause," is actually the perimenopause phase of their reproductive life. This stage most often occurs in the late 30s - 40s. Although fertility is decreased during this phase, it is still possible for a woman to become pregnant.

The next natural stage of a woman's life is menopause. She is said to have reached menopause when she experiences 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. But some women are in menopause and still menstruate.  Once a woman reaches menopause, she then enters her post-menopausal years. The average age for menopause to occur is 51 years, but it can also take place earlier or later, depending on the individual woman. It can also be caused surgically when the ovaries are removed or by certain types of cancer treatment.

DIAGNOSING MENOPAUSE

When diagnosing menopause, your doctor will ask about your medical history, your symptoms, and your menstrual periods. The doctor should also do blood tests to measure hormone levels, a Pap smear, and a physical exam. One very important hormone to measure is called follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). When levels of this hormone are very high, it indicates that your body is not producing adequate levels of estrogen and you have entered menopause. Note that this does not always happen in a woman’s 40’s or 50’s. It can also take place in her late 30s.

You Don’t Have to Live With It!
In the past, women died more frequently in childbirth; PMS was an imaginary problem; and menopause, with all of its age-related infirmities, was just another stage of life to be endured and dealt with.

Today we know that we do not have to age and accept what goes with it.  Medical science has changed not only the quality of our lives, but how long we live them. And even though some doctors still say that women should stop whining and embrace their menopausal woes, why would they choose that if the alternative is to simply and safely replace what is missing?  The truth is you do not have to live with it! Evidence continues to mount that receiving hormone replacement therapy at the onset of menopause is very important to a woman’s ongoing health. Even more importantly, data now exists that pharmaceutical hormones can be dangerous substitutes for the real thing. Research supports the use of all-natural, biologically equivalent hormones, showing them to be free of the serious side effects associated with synthetic pharmaceuticals. biologically equivalent hormones—especially in pellet form—have, on the contrary, demonstrated the ability to support good health, slow the aging process and alleviate menopause-related symptoms.
