  ANDROPAUSE
By now, you must be pretty well versed on menopause and all of the attending miseries that can go with it – both big and small. But what do you know about male andropause? If you’re like most people, probably very little. Or maybe you don’t know anything about it at all. Let’s begin by answering a few basic questions.

WHAT IS ANDROPAUSE?
In a word, andropause is the male version of menopause. It is caused by the same thing a woman experiences – a decline in hormone production. For a man this means that over time his body will manufacture less and less testosterone.  Surprisingly, the decline begins at around the age of 30.  Beyond that age, male hormone levels drop by approximately 10 percent every decade.  By the time a man is between 40 and 55, his testosterone levels will drop appreciably and signal the onset of andropause.  Since testosterone is central to a man’s wellbeing, he will often experience a variety of disturbing physical and emotional changes. These might include things like chronic fatigue, loss of energy, low sex drive, diminished physical agility and increased belly fat.

WHY HAVEN’T WE HEARD MORE ABOUT ANDROPAUSE?
A big reason andropause has not made the front page headlines is the social stigma attached to issues of masculinity. (The same is also true of femininity.) And no man wants to hear that what makes him a man – i.e. his testosterone – is not up to snuff.  In years past when men experienced a physical decline or emotional changes, they assumed that it was some kind of mid-life crisis thing. And their doctors most often encouraged them to accept their plight because they weren’t ‘spring chickens’ anymore. So, things like hair loss, paunchiness, or erectile dysfunction were either not talked about or dismissed as something you couldn’t do anything about. You just had to live with it.

Since the 1940’s, however, there has been far more research on the human body and the importance of hormones in overall health.  Today we know that testosterone deficiency can be linked to osteoporosis, heart disease, moodiness, depression, low energy levels, sexual dysfunction, and other problems that crop up in later life.
WHEN DOES ANDROPAUSE OCCUR?

Most men will experience andropause between the ages of 40 and 55, at which time they can be said to be testosterone deficient. Unlike a woman, a man doesn’t have a clear-cut indication like the cessation of menstruation to mark the arrival of andropause. Although a decline in testosterone levels will occur in virtually all men as they age, there is no way to predict who will experience andropausal symptoms severe enough to seek medical help. Each man’s symptoms vary as does the age at which those symptoms occur.

DIAGNOSING ANDROPAUSE
When you go to your doctor for an annual exam, it’s a good time to discuss any symptoms you may be having and request blood tests to measure your hormone levels. It is important that both free and total testosterone are tested, along with other hormones and indicators of your overall state of health.
The results of those tests may suggest that your body is not producing adequate levels of hormone for optimum health and you have entered andropause.

SYMPTOMS OF ANDROPAUSE

The symptoms of andropause are very much like those of menopause. Men frequently experience anxiety, depression, mood swings, loss of eagerness and enthusiasm for daily life, decreased mental quickness and sharpness, loss of libido, decreased sexual function and/or sensitivity, loss of mental focus, sleep disturbances, chronic fatigue, decreased energy, strength and endurance, prolonged recovery from exercise, no improvement with exercise, less desire for activity and exercise, increase in body fat, weight gain, osteoporosis, loss of cardiac protection, lower good cholesterol and higher bad cholesterol.

NOTE: Some of these symptoms can be due to other causes as well, and should be evaluated by a physician.

You Don’t Have to Live With It!
Today we know that just because we aren’t “spring chickens” doesn’t mean that we have to accept the aging-related decline in health that our fathers and grandfathers once did.  Medical science has changed everything.

The truth is you do not have to live with it! There is strong evidence that testosterone is very important to maintaining optimum health in both men and women. Studies suggest that testosterone directly affects muscle development, fat levels, bone mass, many different parts of the brain, moods, depression, energy levels, ability to have orgasms, heart health and ability to sleep. Testosterone replacement therapy continues to receive a great deal of medical support and the benefits are well documented in a multitude of clinical trials, dating back as far as the 1940’s.

The negative press you have seen on testosterone is based solely on studies performed using pharmaceutical testosterone and anabolic steroids. Biologically identical testosterone pellets are free of the serious side effects associated with those synthetics. Research continues to support the use of all-natural, biologically equivalent testosterone in healthful doses, especially when pellet therapy is used. Remember, pellet therapy is the only delivery system capable of delivering those healthful doses 24/7, directly into the bloodstream, bypassing the liver. It has time and again demonstrated the ability to support good health, slow the aging process and readily alleviate andropause-related symptoms.
